Morgan's Grove

Morgan's Grove is a historic district near Shepherdstown featuring homes and farms built in Greek Revival and rustic styles, including the Old Stone House and a springhouse. The structures are scattered across roughly twenty acres of land.

The district gained prominence when Colonel William Morgan's troops began their military expedition in 1775 to join the Continental Army. This marked one of the earliest moments a Southern military unit participated in the Revolutionary War.

The homes and farms here reflect how people lived and worked in rural West Virginia communities of earlier centuries. The architectural styles visible today show the building traditions and economic activities that shaped daily life in the settlement.

The adjacent park with pavilions, kitchen facilities, and walking trails can be explored for recreation and exercise. Plan to walk through the area to best view the historic structures and the surrounding land.

The park received an official designation in 1989 as the birthplace of the United States Army, an honor few visitors anticipate when they arrive. This formal recognition sets the location apart from other Revolutionary War sites in the region.
