Polyphony, Bronze sculpture at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, United States
Polyphony is a bronze sculpture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee made up of interlocking geometric elements. Long poles and triangular shapes create a complex, maze-like structure that rises from a central base.
The work was created by artist Egon Weiner in 1963 during his time at the university. Its placement at the entrance to the Fine Arts-Music building reflects the commitment to integrate art throughout the campus.
The sculpture takes its name from a musical concept, showing how visual art and sound can communicate with each other. Standing in front of it, you can sense how its forms suggest harmony and the way different elements work together.
The sculpture sits on a grassy area at the corner of East Kenwood Boulevard and North Maryland Avenue, making it easy to locate. The open setting allows you to walk around and view the form from different angles.
The work was cast in a Norwegian foundry, reflecting Weiner's international network and craftsmanship. The artistic process brought together European manufacturing techniques with American campus art.
