Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area

Rend Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area is a large protected region in Franklin County with wetlands, forests, and lakes. It contains different habitats including bottomland hardwoods and open water surfaces that together provide homes for many animal species.

The protected area was established in 1965 to secure water supplies for the region. A partnership between the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the US Army Corps of Engineers created this conservation project.

The area has dedicated zones where birdwatchers and hunters pursue their activities throughout the year. You will see people with binoculars and cameras along the shores searching for birds and enjoying time in nature.

The area has several boat launching areas for visitors, though certain restrictions apply during waterfowl season. Accessible paths allow different visitors to explore various sections of the site.

A large part of the area is designated as a refuge zone for migratory birds, where wetlands are maintained with specialized techniques. This careful management attracts thousands of birds each year seeking food and shelter.
