In-Space Propulsion Facility, NASA research laboratory in Erie County, United States
The In-Space Propulsion Facility is a NASA research laboratory in Ohio focused on testing rocket engines and spacecraft components. At its core is a large test chamber measuring 38 by 62 feet, where engines and vehicles undergo testing under conditions that recreate the extreme environment of outer space.
The facility was founded in 1968 as part of Plum Brook Station and played a major role in advancing aerospace technology. In 1985 it received National Historic Landmark status in recognition of its importance to the space industry's technical progress.
The facility shows how engineers and scientists worked together to advance rocket technology over decades. Visitors can see the spaces where this technical progress happened and shaped the careers of countless aerospace experts.
Visits require advance registration due to limited capacity, and spaces fill up quickly during peak seasons. Plan to arrive early in the day when most tours are scheduled to have better availability.
The testing facility is the only place in the world capable of testing full-scale upper-stage rockets under simulated space conditions. This one-of-a-kind capability makes it essential for rocket development and draws engineers from across the globe.
