Thousand Hills State Park, State park in Adair County, Missouri, US
Thousand Hills State Park is a Missouri state park in Adair County, built around Forest Lake, a reservoir created by damming Big Creek. The park has hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, and small cabins for overnight stays.
The land that became the park was donated by a family in 1952 so that it could be used as a public recreation area. That gift laid the foundation for everything that was built there afterward.
A sheltered observation area in the park protects a set of prehistoric rock carvings left by Indigenous people who once lived across this region. The carvings show animals and symbols that visitors can view up close today.
The park works well for a day trip or a longer stay, and the facilities are spread across the grounds to support both water and land activities. Arriving early is a good idea, especially on summer weekends when the lake tends to be busy.
The lake offers equipment rentals on site, so visitors who arrive without gear can still go boating or fishing. This makes a water-based visit possible without any advance preparation.
