Towosahgy State Historic Site, Archaeological site in Mississippi County, United States.
Towosahgy is an archaeological site with six earthen mounds surrounding a central plaza that once formed part of a fortified settlement. The complex shows careful planning with clear pathways connecting different areas and spaces.
The settlement developed around 1000 CE and remained inhabited until about 1400 CE, a period of significant growth in the region. Archaeologists began examining and documenting the remains systematically starting in 1891.
This place served as a gathering space for ceremonies and community meetings that formed the center of social life. The plaza layout shows how important shared rituals were for organizing this early society.
The site is accessible via a marked walking trail where visitors can explore the mounds and learn from an information station at the entrance. A visit works best on foot and requires no special skills or equipment.
Builders created the earthen mounds through manual labor by carrying soil in baskets from nearby pits and stacking it layer by layer. This method produced mounds that reached considerable heights and remain visible today.
