Washington County Courthouse, County courthouse and arts center in South Kingstown, United States.
The Washington County Courthouse is a historic building in South Kingstown set on a 2-acre (0.8-hectare) property and features Romanesque architectural elements from the late 19th century. The structure displays characteristic Victorian details including steep rooflines and decorative stonework.
Leslie P. Langworthy designed this courthouse in 1892, and it served legal proceedings until 1991. When court operations moved to the McGrath Judicial Complex in Wakefield, the building transitioned to a cultural venue.
The building now hosts the Courthouse Center for the Arts, offering exhibitions, performances, and community events throughout the year. You can see how a historic space continues to serve people in meaningful ways.
The building is easily accessible from Kingstown Road and sits in a quiet area with parking on the grounds. Check ahead about exhibitions or events scheduled, as hours may vary depending on programming.
The building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since November 1992 and represents one of the few surviving examples of Romanesque courthouse architecture in Rhode Island. This protection enabled its transformation into a space that continues to serve the community.
