Wanskuck Historic District, Historic mill district in northern Providence, United States
Wanskuck Historic District is an industrial area spanning 119 acres (48 hectares) with mill buildings clustered along the West River. The neighborhood also contains various types of worker housing, from duplexes to rowhouses, arranged throughout the district.
Mills began operating along the river in the mid-18th century, initiating industrial growth in northern Providence. As factories expanded, worker housing was built nearby to accommodate the growing labor force.
Two churches and a hall built in 1884 served as gathering spots where mill workers socialized and spent their free time. The buildings reflect how the community came together outside of work hours.
The district is bordered by Louisquisset Pike to the east and follows three main streets: Branch Street, Veazie Street, and Woodward Road. These streets serve as useful reference points for navigating through the various parts of the area.
Over 200 structures remain standing, including manufacturing facilities alongside housing, revealing how a worker community was deliberately planned and organized. This level of preservation is uncommon and offers insight into daily life during early industrial times.
