Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area, Wildlife management area in Woodford County, US
Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area is a protected space in Woodford County covering roughly 2,900 acres, with about 2,400 acres of water along the Illinois River. The landscape consists of bottomland forest with silver maple and cottonwood trees, mixed with open water and wetland areas.
This area was established as a conservation zone to protect crucial habitats for migratory birds along the Illinois River. The designation created a vital refuge where waterfowl can find food and shelter during their annual movements.
Birdwatchers from the region regularly visit to observe and document over 200 species found here. Sightings of great blue herons, barred owls, and red-tailed hawks hold special importance for local nature enthusiasts.
Visitors can use designated waterfowl blinds for hunting or fish from the banks and boat access points. Spring and fall are the best times to visit when migration brings larger bird populations and weather conditions are favorable.
Natural artesian wells scattered throughout the area keep water warm even during cold months. This allows year-round fishing opportunities, which is rare in this region.
