South Front Street Bridge, Road and bascule bridge in Elizabeth, New Jersey, US
The South Front Street Bridge is a road bridge with a moveable bascule mechanism spanning the Elizabeth River in Elizabeth. It features a steel deck and wooden pedestrian walkways on both sides of the structure.
Built in 1922 by the American Bridge Company, the bridge served as a key connection for traffic and maritime passage. The bascule truss system reflected engineering practices of that era.
The bridge reflects the industrial past that shaped this region along the Elizabeth River. Its moveable design allowed vessels to navigate the waterway, supporting the economic activity that once thrived here.
The bridge has been closed to vehicular traffic since 2011 and cannot be crossed. Visitors can view the structure from street level and observe its engineering design from a distance.
This is the last moveable vehicular bridge remaining in Union County and stands as evidence of the region's earlier infrastructure. Each side of the structure has different proportions, revealing how engineers had to balance waterway and road traffic needs.
