Holt House, Federal-style historic house in Washington, D.C., United States.
Holt House is a residential structure built in early Neoclassical style with balanced proportions and symmetrical design situated near Rock Creek. The building stands on the grounds of the National Zoo and maintains the architectural features characteristic of its construction period.
The house was built in 1827 on land acquired in 1793 by Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy of the United States. The property changed hands several times before the Smithsonian Institution took it over in 1889.
The house shows how wealthy residents of early 19th-century Washington lived and designed their homes. Its rooms and exterior form reflect the tastes and values of people from that era.
The house sits on the grounds of the National Zoo in northwestern Washington and can be viewed when visitors explore the zoo area. Check the zoo's website for current opening times and access conditions before planning a visit.
The structure is the oldest building in the Smithsonian Institution's collection and has been maintained by the organization for more than 100 years. This long relationship has helped preserve the original structure and its architectural details.
