King Kamehameha Golf Course Clubhouse, Golf course clubhouse in Waikapu, US

King Kamehameha Golf Course Clubhouse is a 74,000-square-foot building spanning three levels at about 750 feet elevation, offering views of Mount Haleakala and both coastlines of Maui. The upper level contains a lobby, the largest pro shop in Hawaii, multiple meeting rooms, dining areas, and professional kitchen facilities.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed this structure in 1957 as a residence for Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe, but construction took place in 1993 following adaptations by John Rattenbury. The long gap between design and construction resulted in significant changes to the original concept.

Hawaiian artworks adorn the interior, including pieces by Herb Kawainui Kane and featherwork by Jo-Anne Kahanamoku-Sterling, reflecting local artistic traditions. These works shape the character of the spaces and connect the structure to the region's art community.

The building sits at elevation with good visibility across the surroundings and may require some time to explore all levels. Different functional areas are well organized, but visitors should wear comfortable shoes since there is considerable walking involved.

The structure features copper fascia around dome roofs with most spaces built below ground, blending naturally into the mountain landscape. This below-ground design helps minimize environmental impact while offering protection from the elements.
