Stones River National Battlefield is a national battlefield and a National Register of Historic Places listed site in Rutherford County, Tennessee, situated near the city of Murfreesboro. The grounds cover open fields, wooded areas, and old paths, with a national cemetery located within the park.
The Battle of Stones River was fought over three days at the end of 1862 and the start of 1863, as Union and Confederate forces clashed for control of middle Tennessee. After the Confederate army withdrew, the Union took Murfreesboro and built a large supply base known as Fortress Rosecrans on the same ground.
