The Howell Downtown Historic District spans five blocks along Grand River Avenue, encompassing sixty buildings across fourteen acres in the central business district.
Following destructive fires in 1887 and 1892, the district underwent rapid reconstruction, resulting in buildings that represent architectural styles from 1865 to mid-twentieth century.
The district includes the Livingston County Courthouse, Carnegie Library, and First Presbyterian Church, each displaying different architectural styles from Neoclassical to Gothic Revival.
The district maintains numerous commercial establishments within preserved historic structures, offering retail spaces and dining options in the downtown area.
The First Presbyterian Church features a square crenelated tower with pinnacles and an arched belfry, constructed of gray coursed ashlar in 1915.
