Howell is a settlement in Livingston County that extends across roughly 4.95 square miles (12.8 square kilometers) of land and water and forms part of the South Lyon-Howell-Brighton urban region in Michigan. The administration maintains departments for public works, safety, parks, recreation, and community development.
The settlement was founded in 1835 under the name Livingston Center and received a post office in January 1836 with Flavius J. B. Crane as its first postmaster. Over the following decades, the place developed into the administrative seat of the county.
