Statue of Anne Hutchinson, Bronze statue at Massachusetts State House, US.
The Statue of Anne Hutchinson is a bronze sculpture at the Massachusetts State House in Boston. It depicts a woman holding a Bible with a child beside her, both rendered in cast bronze.
Artist Cyrus Edwin Dallin created the bronze sculpture in 1915, which was then installed in 1922 after discussions about its placement. The location at the State House was the subject of public debate.
The memorial represents religious freedom and gender equality through the figure of Hutchinson, who challenged Puritan authority in colonial Massachusetts.
The monument stands behind security gates and is best viewed from Beacon Street through the State House fence from the outside. You can see it during daylight hours as you pass by the building.
An 11-year-old neighbor of sculptor Dallin modeled for the child's arm in the bronze figure. This personal connection between the young model and the artist is preserved in the work.
