The Tortoise and the Hare, Bronze sculpture in Copley Square, Boston, US
This bronze work features the two characters from Aesop's fable and stands near the Boston Marathon finish line at the corner of Boylston and Dartmouth Streets. The installation consists of two cast figures representing the race story and can be easily spotted by pedestrians passing through Copley Square.
Nancy Schön created this permanent installation in 1994 as a tribute to Boston Marathon runners. The work was designed to honor the long history of endurance and determination that the race has embodied.
The figures come from Aesop's fable and symbolize a bridge between classical storytelling and modern athletic competition. Passersby see in the bronze figures a reminder of the values of persistence and determination that both worlds share.
The sculpture is located in Copley Square at a central spot that is easy to reach on foot and becomes crowded with spectators during marathon season. The public space is accessible and offers good opportunities to view and photograph the work.
The figures were created by the same artist who designed Boston's famous squirrel sculptures. This detail connects this installation with other well-known public artworks throughout the city.
