Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah Beach Subdivisions Historic District
Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah Beach Subdivisions Historic District, Historic African American beachfront district in Sag Harbor, United States
Three subdivisions named Sag Harbor Hills, Azurest, and Ninevah Beach form a residential area along Gardiner's Bay with numerous summer cottages and spacious lots.
The district emerged in the late 1940s as a summer retreat for middle-class African American families during a period when racial segregation restricted access to many beachfront locations.
Notable residents included performers Lena Horne and Harry Belafonte, writer Langston Hughes, and numerous professionals who contributed to the neighborhood's intellectual development.
The district extends from Hempstead Street to Terry Drive, incorporating multiple residential streets that connect to Haven's Beach and maintaining its original layout.
Brooklyn teacher Maude Terry initiated the development with her sister, architect Amaza Lee Meredith, who designed the subdivision plan for the initial 20-acre parcel.
