Wonderhouse

Wonderhouse is a four-story stone building in Bartow with unusually thick concrete walls reinforced with steel rails throughout. The residence contains 18 rooms and features two bridges that cross over a koi pond on the property.

A Pittsburgh contractor began building this stone house in 1926 following a terminal diagnosis, yet he lived on until 1971. The project became one of the most unusual residential structures of that era.

The house served as a tourist destination during hard economic times, welcoming visitors who wanted to see how the wealthy lived. The way it operated then shows how owners shared their homes with the public when they needed income.

The house features hollow pillars that collect rainwater for cooling purposes, an innovative system for its time. Additionally, mirrors in the fireplace are positioned to reflect sunlight indoors and serve as natural lighting.
