South Florida Military College

South Florida Military College is a Frame Vernacular building located at 1100 South Broadway in Bartow, displaying architectural features from the late 19th century. The structure reflects construction methods and materials typical of military educational institutions from that era.

The institution was founded in 1895 by Evander M. Law and operated for one decade before closing in 1905 due to the Buckman Act. Its equipment was then transferred to the University of Florida, marking a shift in Florida's higher education landscape.

The building served the local community as a training center where young people learned both academic subjects and military discipline during the late 1800s. This dual purpose reflected how education and military preparation were often linked in Florida's development during that period.

The building is located in downtown Bartow and has been registered as a historic landmark since 1972. Visitors can view the exterior masonry and architectural details from the street.

After the college closed, the main building was converted from a military dormitory into a private residence. This transformation shows how the structure was repurposed to serve the community rather than fall into disrepair.
