Cypress Gardens, Historic amusement park in Winter Haven, United States
Cypress Gardens is an amusement park in Winter Haven, Florida that covers 50 acres and combines botanical grounds with water features. The site includes winding paths through tropical plants, small lakes, and areas for events and recreation.
Dick Pope Sr. and his wife Julie opened the park in 1936 as one of the first commercial tourist destinations in Florida, making it an early example of planned leisure attractions in the state. After several decades of operation, the site later became part of Legoland Florida, which integrated the botanical areas into its own concept.
Performers dressed as Southern Belles walked through the gardens during the 1950s, wearing long gowns from the era before the American Civil War and greeting visitors along the paths. These costumed figures became a regular part of daily life at the park and represented a version of Southern heritage that many theme parks embraced during that period.
The botanical section is now accessible through Legoland Florida, which opens daily from 10 AM to 6 PM and provides parking near the entrances. Visitors primarily interested in the plant areas should arrive in the morning when fewer people are around and the paths feel calmer.
The site was home to over 50 water skiing world records and served for decades as the main stage for international competitions in the sport. Many ski techniques and moves used worldwide today were first demonstrated and perfected here in public performances.
