Interlaken Historic Residential District, Historic residential district in Winter Haven, Florida.
The historic residential area sprawls between two lakes and contains many single-family homes with Colonial Revival architecture. The houses follow the shorelines and form connected streetscapes that structure the district.
The neighborhood began development between 1910 and 1924 as a residential area for families of means. Fifty of the homes were later placed on a national registry because of their historical importance.
The homes show design styles from the early 20th century that reflect how people lived at that time. You can see characteristic details throughout the district that speak to the daily habits of the original residents.
You can visit Interlaken Park, located at Avenue L and Orange Street, which offers open lawns and picnic areas for stopping. The area is easy to reach on foot and provides plenty of space to spend time.
The name Interlaken means between lakes and perfectly describes the district's location surrounded by water. A canal system connects the lakes to one another and creates an unusual waterway landscape for this area.
