James P. Kelleher Rose Garden, Rose garden in Boston, US

James P. Kelleher Rose Garden is a small rose garden in the Fenway area of Boston, US, tucked into the larger green space of the Emerald Necklace. Winding stone-dust paths pass between rose beds, benches, a central fountain, and several small cherub statues.

The garden opened in 1931 and was designed by Arthur Shurcliff, who worked with Frederick Law Olmsted. In 2013 the fountain was repaired, and later work fixed the fence, hedges, and arbors.

Warm months bring many people who sit on benches and listen to the fountain while the rose colors change with the season. Volunteers meet on Tuesday evenings to tend the plants, and new helpers are welcomed.

The garden is open day and night, and entry is free. Paths are level enough for wheelchairs, but dogs are not allowed inside.

Despite sitting close to Fenway Park and busy roads, the garden feels quiet and hidden behind tall hedges. More than 1,500 roses grow here, with the biggest show of color usually appearing in June.
