Gwen Frostic Studio
Gwen Frostic Studio, Nature artist studio in Benzonia Township, Michigan, US
Gwen Frostic Studio is an artist workspace in Benzonia Township, Michigan that incorporates natural materials like logs and driftwood, with large windows overlooking the surrounding countryside. The complex features multiple structures with low-pitched roofs designed to blend with the landscape.
Frostic established the studio in 1964 and developed it into a large complex over the following years. The buildings were later added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing their importance as an example of organic design principles.
The studio houses Presscraft Papers, where Frostic created intricate designs carved from linoleum blocks for prints and published illustrated books throughout her career. Visitors can observe today how her handcrafted approach shaped the spaces and objects within.
The property spans about forty acres with walking trails and a pond where visitors can explore the grounds. The site operates as a retail shop during summer months, where locally made craft items are available for purchase.
Frostic designed and built this studio herself despite physical limitations from polio, demonstrating her determination and resourcefulness. The organic architecture emerged from her vision of harmonizing workspace with the natural environment.
