Phat Diem covered bridge, Covered bridge in Kim Sơn, Ninh Bình, Vietnam

Phat Diem covered bridge is a tiled, roofed wooden bridge built in 1902 over the Ân River in the commune of Phát Diệm, Kim Sơn district, Ninh Bình province. It spans three sections and sits on four stone pillars, with a gently curved profile and a red-tiled roof supported by ironwood columns.

The land around Kim Sơn was still coastal marshland about 200 years ago when the first settlers began building connections across the Ân River. In 1902 an earlier wooden crossing was replaced by the current tiled structure, and in 1987 the wooden support frames were reinforced with steel.

Locals have long used the bridge as a meeting point, a shelter from rain, and a shaded spot to rest on hot days. A traditional saying, 'cầu Nam, chùa Bắc', links this kind of covered bridge to the south of Vietnam, marking it as a regional symbol.

The bridge is open only to pedestrians and sits in the center of Phát Diệm commune, close to the Phat Diem Stone Church. Early morning and late afternoon offer the softest light and the fewest visitors.

The bridge has appeared on a Vietnamese postage stamp, making it one of the few local structures honored this way. It was officially listed as a provincial-level architectural and artistic relic in 2018.
