Kirche Zum Guten Hirten, Gothic Revival church in Friedenau, Germany
Kirche Zum Guten Hirten is a Gothic Revival brick church in Friedenau featuring a 70-meter-high tower and dark red masonry walls covered with slate. The building stands at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and anchors the neighborhood with its distinctive outline.
Architect Karl Doflein began construction in 1891, with Empress Auguste Victoria attending both the groundstone ceremony and the opening in 1893. After World War I the bells were recreated since the original ones had been melted down.
The church serves multiple Protestant congregations under the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia umbrella. Visitors can experience how different Christian traditions share the same sacred space.
The church sits centrally at Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and is easy to reach on foot. The narrow side aisles inside create an intimate path for visitors moving through the interior.
The interior was significantly redesigned in 1974 with liturgical furnishings from a neighboring chapel installed inside. These pieces replaced elements lost during wartime.
