Kirche der Entschlafung der Mutter Gottes

Kirche der Entschlafung der Mutter Gottes, Serbian Orthodox church in Himmelsthür, Hildesheim, Germany.

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God is a religious building in the Himmelsthür district with brick walls, a polygonal altar space, and a distinctive roof turret. The structure displays Gothic Revival style and its roofline creates a notable profile in the local streetscape.

The building was constructed between 1902 and 1904 as a chapel for an evangelical women's residence, blending domestic and religious functions. The Serbian Orthodox community acquired it in 1978 and converted it into a church for their faith tradition.

The church serves as a gathering place for the Serbian Orthodox community in Hildesheim, where believers come together for religious services and celebrations. The regular ceremonies and traditions practiced here reflect the faith and heritage of those who worship within its walls.

The church is located in the Himmelsthür district and can be reached on foot for visits. The basement levels are now used for community activities, so you may find programs or gatherings taking place there depending on when you visit.

This church served as the episcopal seat for the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Central Europe until 2015, when the bishop's residence relocated to Düsseldorf. Its role as a religious hub for multiple countries made it far more important than its modest building might suggest.
