Kirchenburg Walldorf

Kirchenburg Walldorf is a church building surrounded by thick defensive walls that sit on a hilltop in Thuringia. The sturdy stone structure includes a medieval tower and combines spaces for worship with fortifications that once protected people during times of unrest.

This fortified church was founded in the 10th century and developed into a protective stronghold during the Middle Ages under church authority. It served the surrounding population as a refuge during times of conflict and danger.

A devastating fire in 2012 destroyed much of the structure, but complete reconstruction allowed it to reopen in 2019. This restoration kept the historical character intact while using modern techniques to strengthen and protect it for future generations.
