Stadtbrille Amberg

Stadtbrille Amberg is a passage gate that crosses the Vils River and connects the Electoral Palace to the armory. The structure consists of three arches supported by two central pillars and contains multiple rooms and corridors on its first floor.

The gate was first mentioned in 1454 as a passage over the Vils and served as a simple crossing. In 1580, architect Hans Hauck directed a major renovation that transformed it into the structure we see today.

The structure shows how Amberg linked important buildings while serving practical purposes. Its multiple rooms combined defensive functions with everyday passage in a single structure.

The site is located directly in the city center and is easily accessible on foot. The structure can be viewed from the outside, with the best views available from the riverbank.

The pillars were equipped with mechanisms to operate gates that could block river traffic. These devices reveal the military considerations that shaped the structure's design.
