First documented in 1454 as a 'passage over the Vils', the structure underwent major modifications in 1580 under architect Hans Hauck's direction.
This fortified water gate represents the engineering capabilities of medieval Amberg and stands as a testament to regional architectural traditions.
The gate contains multiple rooms and passages, connecting the Electoral Palace to the armory through its first-floor corridor system.
The structure's pillars incorporated mechanisms for operating portcullises that could block river traffic during times of conflict.
