Schule am Weißen See, Public school complex in Weißensee, Germany
Schule am Weißen See is a school complex in Pankow with a distinctive dark red clinker brick facade and ceramic decorative plates. The site contains an assembly hall, a two-story gymnasium, and garden areas.
The complex opened in 1931 as the first secular school in Weißensee and introduced co-education. During World War II, the building served as a military hospital.
The white Fraktur inscriptions on the facade come from the post-war period and show how East Berlin expressed its new identity through words carved into the walls. They reflect the political transformation of that era in the building's design.
The complex is located near Weißer See lake and is easily accessible on foot. The buildings underwent major renovation starting in autumn 2018 with expected completion in 2023, so some sections may have limited access during visits.
The grounds include a separate teacher's residence building that was later used as a civil registry office while maintaining its original clinker brick design. This secondary structure displays the same craftsmanship as the main complex.
