Schloss Mühlberg/Elbe, Renaissance castle in Mühlberg/Elbe, Germany
The castle features an irregular four-wing layout constructed on the remains of a water fortress, with a polygonal stair tower in the northeast corner.
The first documented mention of the castle dates to 1272, though its chapel was constructed between 1150 and 1235 under the governance of Grafen von Ileburg.
The late Romanesque castle chapel, dedicated to Saint George, resides in the eastern wing and contains walls reaching 1.5 meters in thickness at ground level.
The castle grounds remain partially inhabited, requiring visitors to respect residential privacy when accessing the courtyard through the main gate.
The western side of the structure remained naturally protected by the Elbe River until 1853, while other sides featured moats and star-shaped earthwork fortifications.
