Schloss Mühlberg/Elbe
Schloss Mühlberg/Elbe, Renaissance castle in Mühlberg/Elbe, Germany
Schloss Mühlberg/Elbe is a Renaissance castle built on the foundations of an earlier water fortress. The structure displays an irregular layout with four wings and a distinctive polygonal stair tower at the northeast corner.
The earliest documented reference to this fortress appears in 1272, though the chapel was built between 1150 and 1235 under the Grafen von Ileburg. This early foundation reveals a long history of occupation at the site.
The chapel in the eastern wing honors Saint George and displays medieval craftsmanship with sturdy walls that speak to the spiritual importance of this place for past residents. Visitors can sense how faith shaped daily life within these walls.
The castle grounds are partially inhabited, so visitors should respect residential privacy and enter the courtyard only through the main gate. Keep noise levels low and be mindful of the people living there.
The western side was naturally protected by the Elbe River until 1853, while other sides featured moats and star-shaped earthwork fortifications. This combination of natural and built defenses shows how strategically the location was chosen.
