Museum Erotica, Sex museum in central Copenhagen, Denmark
Museum Erotica was a sex museum in central Copenhagen with 25 galleries displaying paintings, photographs, films, magazines, and sculptures. The collection was spread across a large building on a busy pedestrian street in the city center.
The museum was founded in 1992 by photographer Ole Ege and manager Kim Clausen, and moved to Kobmagergade 24 in 1994. It stayed at that address until it closed in 2009, after about 17 years of activity.
The galleries displayed erotic works from different societies and periods, from ancient times to the 20th century. Visitors could see how sexuality was expressed through painting, photography, and sculpture across different parts of the world.
The museum was located on one of Copenhagen's main shopping streets and was easy to reach on foot from most of the city center. Some sections required visitors to be at least 16 years old, so carrying identification was a good idea.
One section was dedicated entirely to Marilyn Monroe, with memorabilia connected to her life and image. A separate room was filled with television screens showing audiovisual content related to the museum's themes, giving that space a very different feel from the rest of the galleries.
