Isbjerget, Modern residential complex in Aarhus Docklands, Denmark
Isbjerget is a modern residential complex in Aarhus's harbor district featuring four L-shaped buildings clad in white terrazzo with blue glass elements integrated into the facades. The structures rise up to ten stories and accommodate approximately 208 housing units with varying floor plans and sizes.
The development was completed in 2013 and marked the beginning of Aarhus's transformation of its former container port into a residential area. This project set the course for redeveloping the entire harbor district, which has since grown into an attractive neighborhood.
The complex was designed through collaboration between architectural firms across multiple European countries, shaping how the transformed harbor district looks and feels. Its white buildings have become a focal point where residents and visitors gather along the waterfront.
The location sits directly along the harbor promenade and is easily accessible on foot or by bicycle, making it simple to explore the surrounding area. The district offers a mix of residential space, dining options, and recreational facilities along the waterfront.
The rooflines are deliberately staggered and angled to evoke the appearance of drifting icebergs while simultaneously optimizing sea views for residents. This unusual design merges visual impact with practical function in an inventive way.
