Santuari dels Àngels, Neoclassical sanctuary in Sant Martí Vell, Spain.
Santuari dels Àngels is a neoclassical sanctuary set on a hill in the Gavarres massif, in the municipality of Sant Martí Vell, in the province of Girona. The complex includes the church itself, a shrine room with a small organ, an exhibition space, a restaurant, and rooms for overnight stays.
The original sanctuary was built between 1409 and 1420, and the first pilgrims arrived in 1424 after the bishops of Girona granted indulgences to those who visited. Over the following centuries, the building was rebuilt and expanded, taking the neoclassical form visible today.
The shrine room inside the sanctuary holds a long-standing collection of votive offerings left by pilgrims over the centuries, including painted panels, figurines, and small personal objects. This habit of bringing a gift as a sign of gratitude is still practiced today by those who visit.
The sanctuary is most easily reached by road from Sant Martí Vell, which leads directly to the site. Since the building sits at some elevation, the road can be harder to manage in wet or foggy weather, so a visit on a clear day is a good idea.
In 1958, a private wedding ceremony took place here, which was an uncommon use for a hilltop sanctuary at that time. The event left a trace in local memory and hinted at a role for the site beyond pilgrimage and prayer.
