Castle of San Felices de los Gallegos

The Castle of San Felices de los Gallegos is a fortress with stone walls and square towers surrounding a large central courtyard. The fortification contains three separate defensive lines built during different construction periods.

The fortress was built in the 13th century as a strategic stronghold on the border between Portugal and Castile. It was later rebuilt and strengthened during the 15th and 17th centuries.

The chapel inside shows Romanesque features mixed with Gothic changes from the 16th century. The place was home to noble families who decorated their houses with carved coats of arms.

The site is located at Calle Toriles 22 and offers guided tours through the medieval structures. It is helpful to wear sturdy shoes since the old pathways and stairs are uneven.

The castle contains two well-preserved mansions from the 16th century: Los Mayorazgos and El Corregidor, whose facades are decorated with intricately carved noble coats of arms. These residences show how wealthy families displayed their social rank through architecture and decoration.
