Muralla urbana

Muralla urbana is the fortified wall that encircles Niebla and contains structures built across multiple time periods. It includes several gates positioned around the perimeter and towers spaced along its length.

The wall was first built during Roman times, then substantially rebuilt during the medieval Islamic period. The structure you see today was largely completed in the 12th century.

The walls display medieval Islamic military design in their layout and gate construction, showing how defense strategies shaped the town's physical form. Today you can see how these architectural choices still organize movement through the town.

You can walk along the wall at multiple points, especially near the historic gates. Wear comfortable shoes since the walking surface can be uneven in places.

The wall played a central role in a major 13th century military conflict that influenced weapons technology in the region. This moment marked a turning point in how fortifications were used on the Iberian Peninsula.
