Auto Italia South East, Artist-run gallery space in Bethnal Green, England.
Auto Italia South East is a contemporary art space housed in a converted former car showroom nestled between a DIY warehouse and an evangelical church in Bethnal Green. The venue regularly hosts exhibitions, video works, and other art forms that explore connections between artists and their surrounding world.
The project started in 2007 as an art space in a repurposed garage in Peckham and later relocated to Kings Cross before settling at its current Bethnal Green location in 2016. These moves reflect the growth and evolution of the venue as an independent arts center.
The space grew from a belief that contemporary art should connect directly with everyday questions and social issues. Visitors encounter not just exhibitions here, but also discussions and events where artists engage with the public about their work and ideas.
The space keeps regular hours, so it helps to check ahead for current exhibitions or special events being held. The location is easily accessible by public transport and sits in an active neighborhood where you will find other cultural venues and amenities nearby.
The venue broadcasted Auto Italia LIVE, a television series where artists worked directly on camera and discussed their artistic methods in real time. These broadcasts were freely accessible to viewers and presented artistic practice in an unconventional format.
