Somerton TARDIS, Grade II listed police box in Alway, United Kingdom
The Somerton TARDIS is a concrete police box situated on Acacia Avenue next to the B4237 road in Alway. It features a distinctive lamp fixture on top that once signaled incoming calls to officers on patrol.
This structure was built before 1969 and served as one of four original police communication points in Newport. It allowed officers to contact their local station during an era before radio systems became standard.
Residents painted a colorful scarf on the blue police box during the 1980s as a reference to the Fourth Doctor character from the television series Doctor Who. This creative addition reflects how the community has embraced the structure as a cultural symbol.
The building is easily found along Acacia Avenue and stands out with its blue color and distinctive top lamp. Visitors can view the external telephone access flap that remains in place.
This is the only surviving police box among the four original communication points that once stood in Newport. A restoration grant from Cadw in 2010 helped repair concrete damage that had accumulated over decades.
