Grimsbury Castle, Iron Age contour fort in Hermitage, England

The hillfort spans 8 acres on a plateau, featuring substantial ramparts that rise over 10 feet from the base of the surrounding ditches.

Archaeological excavations in the 1950s uncovered Early Iron Age pottery fragments, sling stones, and a portion of a beehive quern at the site.

The fort's strategic position and architectural layout demonstrate the military engineering capabilities of Iron Age communities in Britain.

A modern road passes through the northern entrance of the fort, following the path of an ancient hollow way leading uphill.

The western entrance contains an external complex of banks and a deep banked ditch measuring 2.5 meters, a rare feature for hillforts.
