Inverlochy Castle Hotel, Country house hotel in Highland, Scotland
Inverlochy Castle Hotel is a Victorian baronial mansion in the Scottish Highlands, situated near Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis, surrounded by mountains and forests. The building has towers, turrets, and large sash windows typical of the style, and houses guest rooms, dining rooms, and common areas decorated in keeping with its 19th-century character.
William Scarlett, Lord Abinger, built the mansion in 1863 as a private retreat, at a time when wealthy families were drawn to the Scottish Highlands following the fashion set by the royal family. In 1944 a Canadian businessman acquired the estate, and his son later opened it as a hotel, which it has remained ever since.
The hotel takes its name from a medieval fortress that still stands nearby and is visible from the grounds. Walking through the interior reveals details typical of a Victorian Scottish estate, including wood paneling, stone fireplaces, and hunting trophies.
The hotel sits outside Fort William and is best reached by car, so planning transport in advance makes the visit easier. Once there, guests can access hillwalking, fishing, and other outdoor activities directly from the grounds without needing to travel further.
Queen Victoria stayed at the estate for a week in 1873 and recorded her impressions in her diary, describing the setting in warm terms. That royal visit helped shape the reputation of the house among Victorian society.
