Royal Marines Memorial, War memorial in Westminster, England.
The Royal Marines Memorial is a war memorial in Westminster featuring two bronze figures on a Portland limestone base. One figure stands watching over a wounded comrade, while bronze reliefs on the base show scenes from military campaigns.
Sculptor Adrian Jones created this memorial in 1903 to honor the Marines who fought in South Africa and China. The original monument was moved in 1940 and reinstalled at its present location on The Mall in 1948.
The two bronze figures show a moment of solidarity between soldiers, capturing how military bonds are remembered in public space. You will find this as a gathering place where people come to honor those who served.
The memorial sits at the corner of The Mall and Spring Gardens in central Westminster. You can approach it easily from multiple directions, and it is visible from the surrounding streets.
The memorial originally stood in a different location and had to be moved because of the construction of a strategic underground bunker. This relocation makes it one of the few monuments in the city that changed its position for security reasons.
