Church of St John the Divine, Holme Chapel, Grade II listed church in Holme Chapel, England
The Church of St John the Divine at Holme Chapel is a neoclassical church with walls of squared sandstone, decorative quoins at the corners, and a bell tower topped with an octagonal cupola on its west side. The building displays solid construction typical of its period.
Built between 1788 and 1794, this church replaced a small earlier chapel on the site. Dr T. D. Whitaker provided funding for the construction and later became the parish vicar.
The interior holds carved oak stalls moved from a demolished Blackburn church, displaying detailed woodwork with leaf designs and hinged seats beneath them.
Access to the building is straightforward for pedestrians, and the interior layout is mostly at ground level, making it easy to navigate. Check ahead about opening times, as regular services are held and the church may occasionally be closed for private events.
The churchyard contains the grave of General Sir James Yorke Scarlett, a British military leader who gained prominence during the Crimean War. Most visitors overlook this burial while exploring the grounds.
