Oughtonhead Common

Oughtonhead Common is a nature reserve near Hitchin that combines wooded paths, open grassland, and wetland habitats alongside the River Oughton. The mix of these different environments creates homes for many different plant and animal species.

This land has served as a communal space since medieval times, when local people used it for grazing animals and collecting natural resources. This long tradition of shared use has shaped the landscape and its ecological makeup today.

English Longhorn cattle graze across the meadows as part of traditional land management that shapes the character of the reserve. Their presence demonstrates how livestock farming and nature conservation work together in this space.

The reserve can be entered from Burford Way or Bedford Road, with parking available near Swinburne Avenue Playing Fields. The paths are fairly level and easy to walk, making the space accessible for different abilities and ages.

The River Oughton creates small habitat zones as it flows through the reserve, each one hosting different plant and animal species depending on the season. This water creates a changing landscape that reveals different aspects throughout the year.
