Statue of Winston Churchill, Bronze statue in Parliament Square, London, England.
The Churchill statue on Parliament Square depicts the politician in military uniform with his left hand in his pocket and right hand resting on a walking stick. The bronze monument comprises the figure itself set atop a granite pedestal that elevates the composition and makes it prominent.
The monument was created by sculptor Ivor Roberts-Jones and unveiled in 1973 to honour Churchill's leadership during World War II. The ceremony took place with the attendance of the Queen and several former prime ministers.
The statue depicts Churchill in a pose that recalls his inspections of war damage across the city. It embodies his presence during London's most difficult moments in World War II.
The monument sits at the northeast corner of Parliament Square facing the Palace of Westminster and is easily reached on foot. The open public setting allows visitors to view the statue from various angles.
Funding for the monument came from about 4,500 citizens and supporters whose names were recorded in a special book. This registry is kept at Chartwell Library and offers a rare glimpse into public backing for the project.
