Peak District National Park, National park in central-northern England, Great Britain
The Peak District spans across 1,440 square kilometers of uplands, featuring limestone valleys, gritstone escarpments, and moorland plateaus at the southern end of the Pennines.
The British Parliament designated Peak District as the first national park of England and Wales in 1951 to protect the landscape from industrial development.
The region maintains ancient farming traditions with shepherds tending flocks across hills while villages preserve medieval architecture and local customs through generations.
The park network includes 2,600 kilometers of public rights of way, numerous parking areas, and multiple visitor centers providing information about trails and activities.
Castleton mines produce Blue John, a purple-yellow banded mineral found nowhere else on Earth, used since Roman times for ornamental purposes.
