Mam Tor, Hill summit in Edale, England.
Mam Tor is a hill summit in Edale, England, rising to 517 meters and composed of limestone and shale. Several walking paths climb through open grassland to the top, which offers views over the Hope Valley and surrounding ridges.
The summit holds remains of a fortification built during the Iron Age over 2,000 years ago. Archaeologists have found burial mounds in the area, pointing to continuous settlement since prehistoric times.
The name means Mother Hill and refers to the way landslides from the main ridge form smaller hillocks below. Walkers can see exposed sediment layers on the eastern flank, where erosion reveals the inner structure of the mountain.
The circular route measures 4.8 kilometers and takes around two hours, with steeper gradients near the start. Parking is available at Mam Nick at the foot of the hill, where the ascent begins.
The mix of shale and limestone causes constant erosion, so the surface of the hill changes over time. An old road section on the eastern side was abandoned due to repeated landslides and now serves as a footpath.
