Sheffield War Memorial

Sheffield War Memorial is a monument in Barker's Pool featuring a 25-meter flagpole set on a bronze base surrounded by four soldier figures. Military emblems and the city's coat of arms are integrated into the bronze structure.

Dedicated in 1925, the memorial displays emblems of the Yorkshire Dragoons, Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, and York and Lancaster Regiment. The surrounding area became pedestrianized in 1989 to improve access for public ceremonies and remembrance events.

The bronze soldiers stand with bowed heads and reversed rifles, creating a space where visitors naturally pause and reflect on loss. The arrangement of these figures invites quiet contemplation rather than celebration.

The memorial stands in the heart of the city on a pedestrianized island that welcomes visitors throughout the year. You can approach the monument easily on foot and observe ceremonies or wreath-laying events that often happen during the day.

The central flagpole was crafted from a single piece of mild steel by Earle's Shipbuilding of Hull and topped with a gilded ball and crown. This shipbuilding achievement connects the memorial to Sheffield's industrial heritage.
