宗泉寺

Sousei Temple comprises several buildings arranged around a central courtyard with traditional Japanese garden design and stone pathways throughout. The structures connect through covered walkways that create a unified complex inviting leisurely exploration.

The temple was founded during the Edo period as a spiritual center for local communities and merchants traveling the Nakasendo trade route. It has maintained its role as a significant place of worship throughout subsequent centuries.

The temple serves as a gathering place where local followers come to practice their faith through daily rituals and seasonal observances. The layout invites both private reflection and moments of community connection throughout the year.

The site is about 15 minutes on foot from Nakatsugawa Station with clear walking routes available. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for cooler indoor temperatures in the buildings during colder months.

Inside one of the buildings are hand-painted ceiling panels featuring dragons created by local artists during the Meiji period. These artworks reveal the craftsmanship of earlier generations and remain visible to visitors today.
