Nakatsugawa, Post town in Gifu Prefecture, Japan
Nakatsugawa is a city in Gifu Prefecture that spreads across a mountainous area in the eastern part of the region. The settlement lies along a river valley, surrounded by forested slopes and rice paddies in the flatter sections.
The settlement grew around a stop on the Nakasendo road, which carried travelers between the country's two capitals during the 17th century. The route lost importance after Japan opened up and new railway lines were built in the 19th century.
The city's name refers to the Nakatsugawa River that runs through its center and shapes the landscape. In the residential neighborhoods, many houses still feature dark wood facades that recall the architecture of the post station era.
The city can be reached by a train line from Nagoya, with the journey taking around two hours. Visitor facilities and signage are mainly located in the center near the station.
In the surrounding forests grow chestnut trees, from whose fruits the locals produce a sweet paste. This specialty is found mainly in small shops along the old road and is offered especially during autumn.
