Church of St John the Evangelist, Victorian religious building in Darlington, England
The Church of St John the Evangelist stands on Neasham Road in Darlington, defined by its distinctive tower and substantial stone structure. Inside, the building contains a two-manual organ and a set of eight bells mounted in the tower.
Construction began in 1847 under architect John Middleton, with the foundation stone placed by a Member of Parliament. The building later received vestries in 1900 and underwent other modifications throughout its existence.
This Grade II listed structure maintained religious services for over 170 years until its final congregation gathered in February 2023.
The building can be viewed from Neasham Road and its exterior architecture is accessible for observation. The location is easy to reach on foot or by car from the town center.
Five of the church bells were cast in 1848 by bell founders Charles and George Mears, representing important pieces of Victorian metalwork. Three additional bells were added later in 1893 by the same family firm, expanding the ringing capability of the tower.
